The CrossFit Open is a unique event in the world of CrossFit. With 200,000+ participants, the top of the leaderboard is littered with athletes we have never heard of or seen before, and in many cases won’t see again. And that’s the beauty of the CrossFit Open. Each week athletes around the world get their number called and the Open workout happens to fall into their wheelhouse and they smash it.
Of course, there are also a bunch of Games athletes at the top, along with Semifinalists and rising stars to make things interesting.
Just based on the number of participants in the Open, winning an event is really hard. For example, Patrick Vellner. Vellner has won the CrossFit Open (2020) and finished on the CrossFit Games podium 5 times, he has never won an event in the CrossFit Open. Even Jeffrey Adler, the 2023 Fittest Man on Earth and 2x CrossFit Open champion, he’s only won a single event in the CrossFit Open (20.4).
So that makes it even more impressive when we see names on top of an event leaderboard multiple times.
Going back to the start of the 2017 CrossFit Open, there have been 31 Open events. 6 men and 6 women have won multiple CrossFit Open events.
The Best
On top is Mat Fraser, with 5 Open event wins (17.4, 17.5, 18.5, 19.3 and 19.5) since the start of the 2017 Open. In one way it isn’t surprising given that this 2017 to 2020 were all during his reign of being Fittest Man on Earth. On the other hand, he hasn’t done the last 3 CrossFit Opens. In the 5 years Mat Fraser did the Open before 2017, he only had one other Open event win, 15.5.
Second in wins since 2017 in Samantha Briggs, with 4 Open event wins (17.2, 17.4, 18.1 and 20.5). This is an amazing feat on its own, especially given that this wasn’t in the prime of her career. 2017 was the first year for Briggs in the Masters competition. During her career, Briggs has won a total 12 CrossFit Open events.
There are three athletes with 3 Open event wins during this time frame.
Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr won 18.3, 21.3 and 22.2. Given her dominance at the CrossFit Games since 2017 it is intriguing that Toomey-Orr only has 3 Open event wins in her career, but at the same time, legacies aren’t built during the Open.
Mallory O’Brien won 22.1, 22.3 and 23.2A. O’Brien’s two win in 2022 were book ends to her first CrossFit Open title when she won with just 4 points.
Jonne Koski won 17.2, 19.4 and 21.1.

7 athletes have won 2 events since 2017
Emma Cary took 21.2 as a 17 year old, and 23.1
