A CrossFit Open Like We Have Never Seen Before

The 2025 CrossFit Open has unofficially come to a close. Mirjam von Rohr has won the CrossFit Open for the second year in a row. Colten Mertens took the men’s title, now having finished in the top 4 for three consecutive years.

While for many of us the Open looks like it always has, several statistics make the 2025 CrossFit Open truly unprecedented.

Let’s start with 25.1. Though not a repeat workout, it’s clearly a sibling to 24.1. With similar elements—lateral burpees and single-arm dumbbell work—it’s not surprising that 24.1 winners von Rohr and Mertens also claimed the top spots in 25.1. In CrossFit Open history, only Kristan Clever (2012-2013) had won consecutive opening workouts. For both von Rohr and Mertens to achieve this feat simultaneously is remarkable.

Both week 1 winners continued their dominance into 25.2.  Each won week 2, giving them just 2 points after two weeks. Previously, only Nicolai Duus won events in the first two weeks of the Open (18.1 and 18.2), but his 7716th place finish in 18.2a means no athlete had ever accumulated just 2 points at this stage. With Mirjam von Rohr and Colten Mertens perfect after two weeks, the sport entered new territory going into the final week.

Mertens nearly completed the perfect Open, finishing second in 25.3 for a total of 4 points. Mal O’Brien was the first athlete to finish with 4 points when she won in 2022, but no man had come close to this mark before. Rich Froning Jr. held the previous record for most dominant men’s Open performance with 18 points in 2014, averaging a 3.6 place finish per event. Mertens’ was an astonishing 1.33.

Perhaps most surprising: all five women atop the leaderboard did not compete at the 2024 CrossFit Games—a first in the sport’s history.

In fairness out of the top 5, only Mirjan von Rohr has never made an appearance at the Games before.

This women’s leaderboard revolution could stem from several factors. The women’s field has become incredibly competitive—in 2024, only Arielle Loewen finished in both the Open top 5 and had competed at the previous year’s Games.

Or perhaps the Open format rewards different athletic qualities than the Games season.  Yet this theory doesn’t fully hold for the men’s division, where the last three “Fittest on Earth” all finished within the top 11 of this Open.

As we move into the next stage of the season, we’ll see if these story lines play into a season long narrative, or if the established Games athletes will reassert their dominance when events become more complex and challenging.
